Pastor Brent and First Lady Melissa Mayo have deep roots at DPC ( Decaturville Pentecostal Church), and their journey is one of both faith and service. Pastor Brent's connection to the church is personal and generational—having been born and dedicated there, he grew up under the leadership of his father, Bishop Welvon Mayo, who became the pastor when Brent was only four years old. This foundation in ministry shaped his life, and at the age of 9, he received the Holy Ghost, marking a significant spiritual milestone in his early years.
Growing up in a pastor's home, Pastor Brent was not only a witness to the spiritual leadership of his father but also learned the value of servanthood. The lessons of service, humility, and dedication were imprinted on him from a young age, guiding his own ministry path.
First Lady Melissa Mayo, born in Lexington, TN, also has a rich history in ministry. Raised in a church where her uncle pastored in the Palestine community, she was involved in worship from an early age, singing and leading worship at her home church. Melissa’s path intersected with Pastor Brent’s when they met at a local youth camp in 2001. Their bond grew, leading to their marriage in 2007.
Together, they have three children—Memphis, Lyric, and Sunday—and a shared calling that has shaped their ministry journey. They began their service at DPC as children’s church leaders, which eventually evolved into roles as youth pastors and then assistant pastors. Their leadership, commitment, and passion for ministry culminated in their election as senior pastors in 2022, where they continue to shepherd the congregation with love and devotion.
Their story is one of faith, service, and deep-rooted commitment to both God and their community, and as a Kingdom couple, they exemplify the spirit of leadership in the church.
Bishop Welvon Mayo’s journey to ministry began in Decaturville, where he was born and raised. At the age of 14, his life took a significant turn when his mother received the Holy Ghost at DPC , an event that would spark a chain of spiritual awakenings in his family. His father soon followed in receiving the Holy Ghost, and then at 14, Welvon himself was filled with the Holy Spirit. These transformative experiences laid the foundation for his future in ministry.
At 21, Welvon felt the call to preach and soon began serving as the youth pastor at DPC. His early years of ministry were marked by passion and commitment to guiding young people. However, DPC found itself without a pastor for a brief period, and the church leaders approached him, asking if he would consider stepping into the role of pastor. After much prayer and reflection, and with a prophetic confirmation, Welvon accepted the call at just 28 years old. He served the congregation faithfully for 34 years, leading the church with integrity, wisdom, and a deep love for God and His people. In 2022, he transitioned to the title of Bishop, passing the mantle of senior pastor to his son, Pastor Brent Mayo.
Sister Shelia Mayo, Bishop Welvon’s wife, grew up in nearby Scotts Hill. She received the Holy Ghost at the age of 15, marking the beginning of her own spiritual journey. Raised in a Pentecostal home, she was part of a rich legacy of ministers, with her father, W.R. Roach, pastoring Grays Chapel Pentecostal Church. Though she was deeply rooted in the Pentecostal faith, Shelia was determined not to marry a preacher, an aspiration that would be turned upside down when she met and married Welvon.
The two wed young—at the age of 18, in 1978—and started their family shortly thereafter. They have two children, Kristie and Brent, as well as six grandchildren who are now part of the legacy of faith that the Mayos have built. Despite her initial resistance to ministry, Sister Shelia later joined her husband in serving the church, becoming a faithful partner in both life and ministry. Together, they raised their children in the ways of the Lord, with Brent eventually following in their footsteps as the pastor of DPC.
Bishop Welvon and Sister Shelia’s story is one of faith, commitment, and generational ministry—laying a solid foundation for the future of DPC and continuing the legacy of service and leadership in the Kingdom of God.
